Sustainable Sourcing Our - 2020 Goals

Nutrition & Biosciences is building transparent and responsible supply chains for our key bio-based sourced materials, based on strong relationships with our suppliers. We are doing so to reduce the environmental footprint in our supply chains, protect human rights, and improve the livelihoods of the communities we source from.

Our aim is to make a step change in sustainable sourcing and build stronger relationships with our suppliers through sustainable sourcing programs. The Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 14 (Life below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) are a central reference for our efforts in sustainable sourcing.

Our 2020 Goals:

  • Develop and implement sustainable sourcing program for 90% of all bio-based raw materials including: palm, soy, seaweed, locust bean kernels, wood and guar.
  • Source 100% certified sustainable palm oil and derivatives and implement comprehensive Sustainable Palm Oil Sourcing Policy.
  • Develop and implement Sustainable Soy Sourcing Policy to drive sustainable sourcing of all soy beans and flakes.
  • Expand the scope of sustainability assessments based on Sedex to at least 100 Tier One suppliers and contract manufacturers.

We see our suppliers as partners in our success as a company, and our Supplier Code of Conduct is a key tool that outlines our expectations on this journey.

We connect with our suppliers in Sedex - Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, and we are members of the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform. SAI Platform is the global food and drink industry platform for developing sustainable agriculture solutions through member-driven pre-competitive collaboration. SAI Platform works with its members and external stakeholders to catalyse change and establish sustainable agriculture as a pre-requisite for doing business throughout the food and drink industry supply chain.

Locust bean kernels are harvested from carob trees and sourced from mainly Morocco, Spain and Portugal. These kernels are the basis for locust bean gum. Carob trees contribute to prevent desertification while storing carbon. There is minimal use of fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation. Our portfolio includes sourcing of organic kernels.

Our alginate and carrageenan products are based on red and brown seaweeds. Wild seaweed has a great environmental profile, using virtually no irrigation, land, or fertilizers.

Guar beans are the source of guar gum and mainly sourced from India. Sustainability is a core tenant of the work of our strategic suppliers who are training guar growers on good agricultural practices to improve yields and farmer livelihoods. Nutrition and Bioscience’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the sourcing of organic guar.

  • SOY

As a part of our effort to minimize our carbon footprint, N&B sources soybeans as close to our manufacturing facilities as possible. Most of our soybeans come from growers in the US. These growers are assessed against the U.S. Soybean Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP). Our deforestation statement is in line with the Soy Moratorium (SoyM) and we are members of the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS).

We use wood as a basis for products such as cellulose gum and XIVIA® Xylitol wood-based sweeteners. Our site in Lenzing, Austria produces xylose for our XIVIA® Xylitol and is a true example of industrial symbiosis. It uses a waste stream of a neighbouring pulp and paper mill and return the residual stream to the factory, which uses it to generate thermal energy for their production. Most of our suppliers are certified against FSC and PEFC standards.
