XIVIA® Xylitol Health Benefits

Dental health and beyond

Over the last 50 years, xylitol has been the focus of a great deal of scientific research.  The results have shown conclusive and consistent dental benefits.

The dental benefits of xylitol were first studied in the early 1970s at the University of Turku in Finland. Since then, xylitol’s ability to inhibit the development of new cavities has been demonstrated in numerous clinical and field studies around the world, some of which have been carried out with the support of the World Health Organization.

These studies have shown that regular consumption of xylitol-containing products, particularly chewing gum, as part of a normal daily diet, and in combination with normal oral hygiene practices, can reduce the formation of new cavities by up to 100%. This caries-inhibiting effect has been consistently demonstrated to be superior to that of other polyols.

XIVIA® Xylitol is proven to:

  • Inhibit the growth of cariogenic bacteria
  • Reduce plaque formation
  • Promote remineralization of damaged tooth enamel
  • Complement and reinforce the effect of fluoride in oral hygiene products
  • Help reduce the development of dental cavities

Confectionery products sweetened with dentally-safe sugar substitutes are key in the fight against cavities. XIVIA® Xylitol is particularly suitable for this purpose due to its unique dental properties. Xylitol is recommended by many dental associations worldwide, through their endorsement of sugar-free confectionery products in which xylitol constitutes at least 50% of the total sweetener.

Other Health Benefits

While studies have mostly centered around dental health, other health benefits are coming to light. Xylitol:

  • Has a positive effect on respiratory infections, sinusitis and acute otitis.
  • Exhibits anti-inflammatory effects on immune function and could be beneficial in controlling skin inflammation.
  • Improves skin moisture and skin barrier function when applied topically.
  • Exhibits prebiotic characteristics and is associated with changes in microbiota composition and metabolic activity.
  • Influences bowel and immune function.
  • Positively influences bone health.
