Emulsifiers are an essential part of food manufacturing and our everyday lives. They perform many essential functions, such as stabilizing emulsions, extending shelf life, and ensuring the right flavor, mouthfeel, and appearance of products.

Responsible sourcing

Our emulsifiers are mainly sourced from vegetable oils, such as palm, soybean, rapeseed, sunflower, castor, and coconut oil.

We do this to reduce the environmental footprint of our supply chains, protect human rights, and improve the livelihoods of the communities we source from.

DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences has been a member of SEDEX since 2008 and we view our suppliers as partners in our success as a company. Our Supplier Code of Conduct was developed to clearly outline our expectations of suppliers.

RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm

Palm oil is versatile and widely used in food products, detergents, cosmetics and, to a small extent, biofuel. It’s the crop with the highest yield per square meter, with between 5 and 8 times more efficient oil yields than crops like soy, rapeseed or sunflower. Palm oil production is also associated with environmental and social risks such as deforestation and human rights issues.

DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences is a pioneer in offering environmentally-friendly and responsibly-sourced palm-based ingredients. We have been a member of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since its founding in 2004—more than 15 years ago. The RSPO initiative aims to make sustainable palm oil the norm, while protecting human rights, conserving forests and biodiversity, and promoting good governance and transparency.

In 2017 we made the switch to 100% certified* sustainable palm oil and palm oil derivatives globally.

Responsible operations

We foster a culture of continuous improvement focused on efficiency and environmental performance. By actively managing our resource utilization (energy, water, electricity, nitrogen), we continuously look at how we can reduce our footprint.

All N&B emulsifier manufacturing sites are ISO 14001 certified. Moreover, as of 2017 they are SEDEX registered and have completed four pillar sustainability audits (also known as SMETA audits). The SMETA audits touch upon topics related to labor practices, health and safety, business ethics, and environmental management. We share the results of these audits with customers through our SEDEX account.

CO2 neutral production

In 2017 we strengthened the sustainable footprint of our manufacturing plant in Grindsted (DK), which became virtually carbon dioxide neutral. This was achieved by replacing coal with biomass as an energy source and by feeding the local district heating system with waste heat, saving more than 64,000 tons of CO2e annually—an amount equal to removing 27,000 cars from Danish roads for a year.

Better nutrition

Emulsifiers can also contribute to healthier food. For instance, PANODAN® enables highly nutritious bakery products with an increased grain level, while GRINDSTED® CRYSTALLIZER enables the production of margarines and biscuits that are low in saturated fat and have no trans fats.
