What is soy lecithin? Is soy lecithin the same as soy? These are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding our soy lecithin products.

  • SOLEC® Soy Lecithin

Adds more value to functional foods than any other lecithin on the market.

DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences offers a wide range of lecithins that deliver the functionality our customers need.  Although the word lecithin is derived from the Greek "lekithos," which means "yolk of an egg," the primary sources of our lecithins are the soybean, sunflower or rapeseed, and they set the standard for quality and reliability.

A Multi-Purpose Ingredient with Health Benefits

Lecithin consists of a naturally occurring mixture of phospholipids, glycolipids, neutral lipids and sugars, which allows it  to interact well with other ingredients in food,  Lecithin serves as a multi-purpose functional ingredient or a processing aid and also provides consumers with recommended nutrients. Lecithin has long been used in the food industry to serve many different functions, in industries from bakery to confectionery to culinary and more.

Using specialty processes, we have extended lecithin's functionality and physical characteristics to create a wide variety of products.

Here are some of the benefits our lecithins can bring to your products:

  • Emulsifying
Helps maintain the stability of foods such as ready-to-serve infant formulas, low-fat salad dressings, margarine and chocolate
  • Releasing
Helps food release from production equipment and contact surfaces, enabling production of meat products, breads, sliced processed cheese, pasta and cookies
  • Wetting & Instantizing
Helps instant powders mix more quickly and effectively, making powdered milk, protein shakes and instant puddings easy-to-enjoy foods
  • Nutrient for health and development
Soy lecithin is a source of the essential nutrient, choline, which is available in some foods and as a supplement in granule form. There is some evidence that the essential nutrients found in lecithin and choline (phosphatidylcholine) may play a role in memory and cognitive function, as well as liver function. Emerging evidence also indicates that choline may play a role in physical performance.
