COPENHAGEN, Denmark, November 12, 2020 – The Danisco Foundation® has awarded the 2020 Danisco® Microbiome Science Award to Dr. Sarkis Mazmanian, Luis & Nelly Soux Professor of Microbiology in the Division of Biology and Biological Engineering at California Institute of Technology. Dr. Mazmanian has been selected for his research on the symbiotic relationship between bacterial species of the gut and the nervous and immune systems of their host.
Specifically, Dr. Mazmanian’s research focuses on the interaction between the gut microbiome and the brain and the impact of this gut-brain axis on diseases of the brain and overall immune system. His research has the potential to develop novel natural therapies to treat neurologic and immunologic disorders.
Dr. Mazmanian has received several awards and recognitions for his research including the Searle Scholar appointment in 2006, “Best Brains in Science under 40” by Discover Magazine in 2008, the MacArthur Foundation’s “Genius Grant” in 2012 and the “Science Dream Team” award from the Kavli Foundation in 2017.
Dr. Mazmanian will be formally honored at a virtual ceremony to be held on December 3, 2020 at which he will present some of his research to prominent scientists and leaders of DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences.
