Asia is tipped to be the largest region for plant-based food consumption in the $21bn global finished product market by 2025 on the back of consumers’ ethical, health and environmental concerns, plus extensive product innovation.
A plant-based diet is not new to Asian consumers. Traditionally, many Asians consume soy- and tofu-based rich foods as part of their daily diet. According to GlobalData’s 2020 Market Pulse Survey Results, 24% of consumers in Asia Pacific said that they follow a low-meat diet, with a total of 13% who are either vegan or vegetarian. With about one third of consumers in Asia Pacific consciously reducing their meat intake or are on meat-free diet, are the current plant-based meal offerings able to satisfy them and their constant search for new food experiences? How would innovation in plant-based accelerate market expansion into mainstream, and continue to meet consumers’ increased demand for better health, better taste and better-for-the planet food?
